Malawi in Transition

With a per capita income of less than 350 USD a year, Malawi is among the poorest countries of the world. On the Human Development Index issued in 2014 it ranks 174th out of 187 nations. Highly dependent on foreign aid, the country lacks in resources and infrastructure, education is rare, the life expectancy is only 55 years and about one out of 16 million inhabitants are infected with HIV. However, amongst the inhabitants of Lilongwe, the country’s capital, and Blantyre, its economic and financial centre, where the photos of this exhibition project initiated by Goethe Institute were taken, the motivation to change things and the hope to succeed are palpable.
